Our CommunityRecreation & LeisureBike & Pedestrian PathwayPathway Plan

Bicycle & Pedestrian Pathway System Plan:

In 1998, the City of DeWitt Planning Commission adopted a Bicycle and Pedestrian Pathway System Plan. The purpose of the plan is to assist the City in determining how public funds available for non-motorized transportation should be utilized. The public participated in the preparation of this plan through an Issues Identification Workshop
Pathway System Recommendations:
The City needs to focus on certain areas to remove existing dangerous conditions. The following is a prioritized list of actions that remain to be completed that the City should undertake to develop a complete bicycle and pedestrian pathway system.
  • The City, in conjunction with the Township and Road Commission needs to develop a multiple purpose pathway on Herbison Road between Schavey Road and Turner Street
  • The City needs to develop a multiple purpose pathway on Howe Road between Schavey Road and Norris Road
  • The City needs to improve signage on existing pathways to inform users of the proper ways to use the facilities
  • The City needs to add a physical barrier on the bicycle pathway on DeWitt Road where the pathway is adjacent to the roadway
  • The City needs to improve pedestrian and bicyclist conditions on East Dill Drive by adding sidewalks and bicycle lanes/shoulders
  • The City, in conjunction with the Township and Road Commission needs to reduce confusion and increase safety at the following intersections: Herbison and DeWitt, Herbison and Turner, Herbison and Schavey, and DeWitt and Webb
  • The City needs to improve pedestrian and bicyclists conditions on East Webb Drive by adding sidewalks and bicycle lanes/shoulders
Once the Area completes these steps it can continue making improvements by:
  • Extending pathway on Herbison Road east to US-27 and west to Airport Road
  • Adding park-like amenities to the pathways (when not accomplished during other improvements)
  • Creating linkages across the Looking Glass River
  • Adding a pathway on the west side of DeWitt Road
  • Adding sidewalks and bicycle lanes on East Main Street
  • Improving bicycle lanes on the northern portion of Schavey Road
  •  Adding bicycle lanes on Wilson Street
