City Snow Plowing Policy:

Snow plowing of City streets is governed by the City's Snow Plowing and Removal Policy, revised on September 22, 1999. This policy calls for the following course of action in removing snow:

First Priority:

  • Downtown area described as that area bound by Market, Washington, Scott and Madison Streets including all streets and parking spaces contained within.
  • Primary routes which are:
    • Bridge Street/DeWitt Road from I-69 to the North City Limit
    • Main Street from Schavey Road to the East City Limit
    • Herbison Road from Airport Road to U.S. 27
    • Schavey Road
    • Turner Street
    • Wilson Street

Second Priority:

  • All remaining streets.
  • Sidewalks on the bridges and contiguous to public properties and cleaning the cul-de-sacs within the City.

Third Priority:

  • Hauling snow from the downtown areas and from intersections where piled and drifted snow has caused site distance limitations.
  • Plowing and clearing cemetery drives.
  • Refilling sand barrels.
  • Repairing mailboxes/streets signs damaged by snowplowing.

Efforts are always made by the City to prevent the snowplows from pushing snow into your driveway. This cannot always be avoided.

Please do not shovel, blow or push snow from your driveway or the sidewalk onto the street.

Please respect your mail carriers by shoveling the snow from around your mailbox and if you have a fire hydrant in front of your property it is good practice to keep this area clear of snow as well.  Keeping these areas maintained will help ensure prompt delivery of your mail and a quicker response time from the fire department in case of a fire in your neighborhood.
