Meet the City Attorney

City Attorney - Daniel C. MatsonDaniel C. Matson has served as DeWitt's City Attorney since 1970. He served as the Assistant Prosecutor for Clinton County for one year prior. Daniel has also served as a Municipal Charter Consultant to various Michigan communities.

Daniel's professional affiliations include:

  • Served as Chair of the Municipal Charter Revision Focus Group
  • Served two terms as President and 10 years as a Board Member of the Michigan Association of Municipal Attorneys
  • Served two terms as President and 10 years as a Board Member of the Michigan Municipal League Legal Defense Fund
  • Served two terms as President of the Clinton County Bar Association, Chairperson, Council member, Secretary and Treasurer of the Public Corporations Law Section, State Bar of Michigan
  • Past Chair and present Council member of the Arts, Communications, Entertainment and Sports Law Section, State Bar of Michigan and current Board Member of the Michigan Municipal League Foundation.

  • Real Property Law Section
  • Alternative Dispute Resolution Section

Mr. Matson was the recipient of the 2004 William L. Stende Ethics and Civility in Local Government award by the Michigan Association of Municipal Attorneys. He serves as chair of its Ethics Roundtable. He also received a Special Service Award for municipal charter work from Michigan Municipal League, served as a Board Member of the Community Dispute Resolution Center for 12 years and was Vice Chair and is currently a Board Member of the Clinton Health Foundation.

Daniel received his Bachelor's degree from Wayne State University and his Juris Doctor from Wayne State University Law School.

The City Attorney's Duties include:

  • The City Attorney serves as chief legal advisor to the City Council, the Mayor, City Administrator and all City Departments, Commissions, Boards, Authorities, Offices and Agencies.
  • The City Attorney represents the City in all legal proceedings and performs any other duties prescribed by the City Council.
