The City of DeWitt contracts with Associated Government Services (AGS) for providing building, mechanical, electrical and plumbing inspections for construction in the City.
Bert Gale serves as the Building Official for the City. Building Inspector Dave Hess holds office hours at City Hall, Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM. Inspections and other services are performed five days a week.
The primary responsibility of the Building Department:
- To administrate and enforce construction codes using the following standards:
- The City enforces the state construction code consisting of BOCA 1996 building code.
- The electrical code used is 1996 National Electrical Code with state amendments.
- The mechanical code used is 1996 International with state amendments.
- The plumbing code used is 1997 International with amendments for the plumbing code.
- In July of 2001 the City will be including the International Building Code and the International Residential Code instead of BOCA.
Permits are required for the following:
Construction or alteration of any structure

Installing or replacing a fence

| Construction of an addition |
Change of occupancy of a structure |
| Demolition or moving of a structure |
Installation or alteration of any electrical, mechanical or plumbing equipment |
| Replacing or repairing a roof |
